A Maine visit

The horses and dogs of my family in Maine!

Mom took me out driving with one of her horses (which I had never done); here’s Janna distracting the horse will we climb in the cart. I enjoy the super serious look.

The super serious look did not last long at all.

The view from my seat

I felt a bit sick from the driving, which mom attributed to spending most of my time looking through a camera lens instead of watching the road. Perhaps she has a point.

Lens flare is fun!

Bonus points if you can identify this

Hello beautiful light!

Nap time with the pooch.

California Trip

After my Hawai’i trip, my parents and I flew to San Francisco together to extend our vacation.

We stayed with my parents’ friends in San Anselmo, and I adored their sweet dog

I had never been to the redwood forests, so I threw mom in the photo for some scale on this giant tree stump

some lovely seaweed

we visited a few horse ranches

Horsey photo shoot!

The mini horses liked to come out and play while mom was riding Máni

Fenway

My good friend Skye brought her adorable dog, Fenway, to visit for the afternoon.

She kept crawling toward the camera with excitement

She was fascinated by mom’s horses!

She wanted so badly to be friends with everybody!

Pretty Horses

A week in Maine is never complete without a few horse photos.

Maine animals

I had another great trip to Maine last weekend, and as usual most of the photographs I shot at mom and dad’s house were of the animals 🙂

I love the light in this one!

This one makes me laugh.

A couple non-breathing subjects: these old blue bottles have been on the kitchen window sill for a while and the lighting shining through it was fantastic.

I couldn’t have set this shot up any better myself – the dogs all happened to sit down in a perfect line.

Sinna and others

Mom is in the process of training Sinna, who is now old enough to be ridden (4 years), so she took her out for a quick ride in the backyard for photos.

Sinna was doing well and mom didn’t need the whip, so Neal was kind enough to hold it… and pose with it.

I loved the light coming through the mini-horse’s mane, plus the random chicken walking through the scene.

Family icelandic horses

Here are the full-size horses! Mom has raised Icelandic horses for many years and keeps acquiring more. I used to say the more kids leave the house (there are four of us), the more horses she gets. 🙂

Icelandics 1

No, this is not a test of a Halloween costume. Many Icelandic horses develop sweet itch after living outside of Iceland for a few years, and covering parts of the horse’s body is one way to combat it. They’re not used to the biting midges we have here, and they rub their body raw trying to scratch the bites.

Mom wanted some riding photos with Hrydja (Hreeth-ya is my best guess for pronounciation; I’m sure mom will correct me), so we ventured into one of the pastures. She’s 19, but has never been a riding horse until now.

Mom corrected me on my caption. I had originally wrote that she liked to lean a bunch, when in fact she’s doing a dressage movement called a “leg yield”.

It’s really hard to resist a horse portrait like this.

The mane on her is amazing.

Auto focus comes in handy! Mom wanted a photo of the mane from her point of view, but didn’t trust Hrydja enough to release to reins so she could take it herself. So I’m standing as high as I can, holding the camera in front of mom’s head and doing many shots, hoping one will come out. Looks like one did.

Awww…. pretty horsey

Family mini horses

Mom has two cute miniature horses, Windy and Puck.

Windy and Puck interested in me…

…and now they’re bored with me

Just to give an idea of size, here’s mom taking them out to the dog run (where they sometimes hang out when the dogs aren’t there).
