I loved spending time with my dear friends and their super cute baby. It’s pretty rare that babies actually want to sit perfectly still and smile for a posed portrait, so I embrace the many faces and movements they make.

UWS Family Chaos

When I enter a home for the first, I never know how the kids are going to react to me. Some will hide behind a parent’s legs, some will drag me to their playroom right away, while others will just stare, not yet sure what to make of me.

Excited Service Dog for PAWS NY

This is the third year I’ve worked with PAWS NY to help them put together a calendar for one of their fundraisers. It’s fun to be able to travel to different parts of city and meet all the lovely pets, clients, and volunteers. Trudy, the sweet service dog, was my first session earlier this spring. I met the volunteer outside the building, and was told that Trudy loved to greet him by jumping up the moment she was let out the door. She did not disappoint!

A New Train Set and Bagels

Families will often ask me for ideas on what they should do for documentary in-home sessions, especially if the weather outside is gross (as it was this particular day). I love seeing everyone interacting, so games and toys are a natural activity to bring out fun family moments. This mom and dad had just purchased a new train set for their toddler, so they waited until I arrived to present it to her.

She wasn’t quite sure what her mom was doing at first as the train set box was being opened.

And she definitely didn’t know what I was doing there in her living room (very soon after, she forgot about me).

Little moments between family members like this are what I love about these sessions.

Sometimes it’s not the children who find the most joy out of a new toy for the house.

Breakfast time! Mom gives her a ponytail every morning to avoid having to clean cream cheese from her hair (a wise move).

She was very kind and offered a few bits of (pre-chewed) bagel to me. Mmmmm…

Cheers!

It’s nice to share with mom, too.

Some table entertainment from dad is always welcome.

I always approve of family music time.

Helping mom put on makeup

She was ready to go running off the edge of the bed. Luckily, mom and dad are quick.

I love teeth-brushing photos. Lots of toddlers love this time, so I get great expressions (and even if they don’t – screaming photos can be just as fun). I also love the challenge of shooting in NYC bathrooms – for this one I had to sit on the toilet to get myself out of the mirror.

She insisted on walking me to the elevator as I left, and of course the doll in the stroller had to come along. I love send-offs like this.

Early Morning with an UWS Family

Starting a family session at 7am is fantastic – okay, not the “getting up by 5am” idea for me, but I love seeing what families have established as their morning routines. Little things the parents do that seem like nothing – braiding hair, making oatmeal, helping the kids decide what to wear – are actually full of amazing little moments and connections.

I was offered a plastic cup immediately upon my arrival
new york family portraits documentary uws upper west side

When I first talked with this family, I asked for one thing that made them unique. The mom wrote “we have a family band.” Wanting to be surprised instead of inquiring further, I was very curious to learn what she meant. Every morning before the family members disperse for work and school, they all sit down with instruments and sing traditional Jewish songs together. Amazing. Just ten minutes a day, but it’s something these kids will remember for years to come.

This was a Friday morning, and at the end of family band time the little boy asked his mom, “momma, is it time for Baby Shabbat now?” I nearly died of cuteness overload. She explained that first he had to go to preschool, and then afterwards would be Baby Shabbat. He seemed satisfied by this answer.

Baking Cookies in Maine

It’s cookie baking time! I love seeing little kids introduced to family activities and traditions. Homemade cookies were always a staple in our house growing up, so it was high time we introduced my niece to this wonderful tradition.

Last Hurrah in Brooklyn

This adorable family was packing up and leaving their familiar Brooklyn neighborhood for good. They wanted to celebrate their time here, so they invited me to their home and favorite neighborhood spots for a morning. The moment I rang the bell I heard the dog barking incessantly, then the dog sat on my feet once I got to the hallway, and upon entering the living area one of the girls ran out naked and proceeded to do a little dance, shaking her naked bum at me. I could tell this was going to be an excellent day. I was not disappointed.

Dancing, dressing, and nursing – three great ways to start the day.
brooklyn new york family documentary photography

I love way the dog is looking at his human here. When I’m photographing kids I often find myself on the floor, and this sweet little dog would take most of those opportunities to plop himself down in my lap. I guess he approved of me.

Art Project with the Kids

Are you constantly on the lookout for interesting activities  to do with your kids? Read on for a fun art project. I reached out to my friend Christina Soriano, a teaching artist, about combining forces to bring something new to parents. Enjoy!

Back to School Literacy and Art Project
by Christina Soriano, Teaching Artist

Help prepare your children to be classroom-ready with a fun, inspiring project that will keep them creatively focused and promote motor skills. This project is inspired by a book by Peter Reynolds titled “Sky Color”, whose heroine is a young artist named Marisol. The story encourages observing how the sky changes colors during different times of day and weather. I’ve read the book to children ages 3-10 and regardless of age, it always gets them excited to start making art!

20150502_art_032
Project: Sky Color Cityscape or Landscape Collage

Materials: Large format watercolor paper, a variety of wide and thin paintbrushes, watercolor set, water cup, paper towel, scissors, glue stick and a variety of collage papers (textured, solid, patterned, metallic)

materials

1. Introduce the activity by having your child look at the sky and make 3 observations about the colors, clouds and weather.

sky

2. Begin to paint! Encourage color blending and mixing with the watercolors to create their own “sky color”. *Artist tip: Brush a thin layer of water on the paper before adding paint. This will allow the paint to flow easier.

painting
3. Allow a few minutes for the watercolor paper to dry. During this process, encourage your child to describe what types of things they notice outside such as houses, buildings, landmarks, even lampposts or fire hydrants!

skyline IMG_3436
4. Begin cutting the papers and create different shapes and sizes of shapes. Paper can be torn or ripped, too!

cutting shapes
5. Once the paper is dry, overlap and glue smaller shapes over larger shapes to create depth, dimension and detail!

glue-shapes
*Bonus step: If your child is old enough, have them write a story about their art piece. Otherwise, do an “art share” and they can talk about their work!

Enjoy and have a great fall season!

A snippet of life in San Francisco

I love photographing repeat clients. Eddy and Nicci were married five years ago, and I shot their ‘secret mission’ wedding (parts I and II) and their not-so-secret reception. I traveled to San Francisco a few weeks ago and was quite happy to be able to see these two again.

Activities during photo session are great fun. When I asked Nicci what sorts of activities are important in their lives, she responded “quilting and reading aloud to each other.” I was quite intrigued with them reading to each other, so I followed up with further questions.

san francisco couple portraits panhandle park reading

– When did you start reading to each other? –
“Oh, probably about 5 years ago.  It was when we were living in Houston and we started reading this very long, (what turned out to be) very terrible book every night before bed.  It is called the Deptford Trilogy and we tried to stop reading it several times, but we sort of considered it a challenge to finish it, so we kept on.  The last line of the book was, “You egoist!”  We still say that to each other when something seems long and totally pointless.  Eddy has been reading to me every night before bed since then.  I read to him when we take car trips and sometimes when we are just hanging out at home.”

san francisco couple portraits panhandle park reading

– Whose idea was it? –
Probably mine.  I’m bossy.

san francisco couple portraits panhandle park reading

– How many books have you read to each other? –
“Oh, gosh, hundreds probably.  We have basically covered nearly all of Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Madeline L’Engle, Laura Ingalls Wilder, the Bronte sisters, Harry Potter, and so many more.  Right now, we are working through a compilation of Jules Verne.”

san francisco couple portraits panhandle park reading

– What have been your favorite books? –
“We’re both pretty into Charles Dickens.”

san francisco couple portraits panhandle park reading

– How often do you read to each other? –
“Daily!  Sometimes several times a day.”

san francisco couple portraits panhandle park reading

– How do you choose what titles to tackle next? –
“Sort of weird free association!  Sometimes we’ll see a movie that we like and it will remind us of something then we’ll get the book and put it in our queue.  Like Eddy got a collection of Ray Harryhausen movies for Xmas last year and they’re mostly based on H.G. Wells stories, so we put those on our Xmas list this year.  Also, last time we went to an aquarium we decided we wanted to read Moby Dick.  We’ve been reading long enough, we’re pretty much always trying to think about what we can read next together.”

Aside from reading, every photo shoot needs some skipping and Monkees walks. Thanks for the fun afternoon, you two!

Prepping for Baby on the Upper East Side

It’s almost baby time for Julie and Seth! I spent an evening with them as they added more details in preparation for expanding their family. It’s really fun doing non-traditional maternity sessions, to get a real-life portrayal of this amazing time.

Adventures with Outdoor Paws

Hiking trails, fresh air, and a lake – not items that an average NYC dog experiences on a regular basis (or person, for that matter). I spent the day with 4 very happy dogs experiencing all of those – an adventure day with Outdoor Paws! I met owner Anna Du first thing in the morning to pick up all the dogs, then enjoyed a day of hiking in Harriman State Park. What fun!

I think Daisy was excited about going on a trip
new york dog adventure

When we fist discussed details of the day, Anna warned me that one of the dogs always sits in the front seat, and that I might have a furry companion on my lap for the ride. A-okay with me! I thought a quick self-portrait with Hazel was necessary. (A technical note: I nailed the focus on the first try! Go me.)
